Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lecture modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Perform high quality research in the field of Biochemistry.
  • Supervise honours, masters, and doctoral students.
  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as prescribed by the Head of Department.
  • Assist with the maintenance and operation of the department’s research equipment.

Inherent requirements:

Associate Professor:

  • PHD in Biochemistry.
  • An NRF rating of at least C3 or equivalent status.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in ISI accredited journals.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated MSc students.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in the area of protein biochemistry.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate (at least MSc) students.
  • Editorial board member or guest editor of high-quality national or international scholarly journals.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at high education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

Professor:

  • PHD in Biochemistry.
  • An NRF rating of C1 or C2 orequivalent status.
  • Demonstrated successful supervision of graduated MSc and PhD students.
  • Proven international recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in the area of protein biochemistry.
  • Proven experience in delivering keynote addresses at national scholarly conferences.
  • Experience as external examiner for masters’ and doctoral students.
  • Act as editorial board member of high-quality international/ISI/IBSS journals.
  • Serve as a member of an international scholarly society OR an international committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.

Recommendations:

  • Registration as professional natural scientist.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications applying experimental biochemistry to microbial metabolism.
  • Experience/interest in the use of advanced analytics such as LC-MSMS in protein or small molecule identification/interactions.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • University management experience.
