Job Purpose

To acquire new quality merchants that require merchant solutions and to maximise business development opportunities with existing merchants to ensure sustainable and profitable relationships.
As a consultant of Group Card and Emerging payments ensure the acquisition and the influencing of sales of all Group Card and Emerging Payments products and solutions.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Sales planning and delivery

  • Manages the end to end sales cycle in order to acquire new merchants and to generate significant revenue from multiple merchants across the responsible market.
  • Builds and maintains a successful sales pipeline by generating leads both directly and indirectly via channel partners working in conjunction with the channel management team and other key stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Negotiates profitable rates with merchants within prescribed parameters.
  • Works with internal key stakeholders / partners such as business banking consultants and merchant solutions service consultants to cross / up-sell products such as BluMobi, MasterPass SnapScan and other new developed products to achieve business targets.
  • Through the establishment and maintenance of relationships with internal stakeholders, proactively enable and influence acquisition of Card and Emerging payments products and solution.
  • Adopt a Universal banking approach to ensure you leverage cross-product opportunities.
  • Develops good merchant relationships from acquisition to post-sales follow up to maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Act as the Group Card and Emerging Payments point of contact in province and aid stakeholders in Card Sales and Service related matters.
  • Provides regular constructive feedback about the product uptake to the Product and Development teams.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with customers in Business Banking as guided by segment and the Customer Value Propositions.
  • Reports back on customer needs to acquiring and card product teams for strategic and product decisions.
  • Attends Business Banking branch meetings to present on new product updates, advises on competitor activity and trends in the acquiring industry.
  • Acquire new quality sales against sales and turnover targets as specified.
  • Achieve Card issuing targets as specified.
  • Amount of leads followed up and acquired.
  • Full on boarding of new sales until merchant number issued and actively trading, as agreed with merchants.
  • Diners Acceptance, SnapScan, Merchant Capital, Instant Money (Bulk issuing) sales against turnover targets as specified.
  • Achieve:
o Annual sales and turnover
o Achieve Sales targets
o Profitably met merchant discounts
o Quality of merchants acquired
o Cost containment, e.g. contribute to favourable cost to income ratio

Communication and relationship management

  • Works closely with all key internal stakeholders to maximise business development opportunities including Marketing, Channel and Product teams.
  • Contributes to targeted marketing campaigns by presenting merchant solutions offerings to customers at sector specific events.
  • Attends to client service requests when required and ensures resolution within agreed timelines.


  • Number of acquired merchants banked by Standard Bank but not acquired by Standard Bank Merchant Solutions
o Number of quality sales
o Number of profitable merchants
  • Provides accurate and timely market information on the relevant market sector to merchants to help drive the future marketing and product strategies through improved merchant solution sales.
  • Provides meaningful expertise and insights to stakeholders on Group Card and Emerging payments products and solutions
  • Number and quality of market and product related information shared with specific client segments.

Preferred Qualification and Experience


3-4 years
Sales experience in retail, e-commerce, payments industry, sales experience in CNP(Card Not Present), card processing or card related payments would be a distinct advantage
1 years experience in FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) industry will be an added advantage

Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise

3-4 years
Sales experience in retail, e-commerce, payments industry, sales experience in CNP(Card Not Present), card processing or card related payments would be a distinct advantage
